Old Aged People's Status

/

Elderly people are vulnerable people regarding socio economic status and also health and nutritional status. In the context of Nepal the status of elderly people is not satisfactory.

Urbanization and industrialization has its impact on the society. Number of joint family is slowly changing to nuclear family and this is sure to affect the wellbeing of elderly people because in Nepal elderly people depend on their child or grandchild for care. Till now although most of the elderly people have fair access to the care of their family they have minimal economic and health cover.

The law of Nepal rules that parents can chose if they want to stay with their son or daughter and they have to be taken care by them but when the financial condition of the society is low in itself vulnerable group like old people are easy target of poverty. And among them females particularly widows are struck hard as their economical status depends on their marital status

There are some attempts from government to make life of elderly people easier. Government provides Rs.500 old age pension to 70 plus and widows aged 60plus and health check of Rs.2000 at a time however this has minimal coverage.

Social welfare center elderly home of Pashupatinath is the only care center run by government in Nepal with the capacity of 230. Needless to say this is not sufficient.

In conclusion the status of senior population in Nepal is worrisome and it is likely to increase due to increasing life expectancy rate of people.
