Brain Drain

/

Migration of skilled intellectual and technical human resources from their home country to more favorable geographic, economic or professional environment is Human capital flight, generally known as “Brain Drain”.

Numerous country in which majority of them are developing country suffer severely form this trend. This is no more news to us now. My home country Nepal has been losing its medical professionals to developed countries like USA, Canada, UK etc. However developed countries like UK, Australia, etc are also no exceptions in some ways.

Oxford Advanced Learner’s dictionary defines Brain drain as “the movement of highly skilled and qualified people to a country where they can work in better conditions and earn more money.”

Precisely reasons of brain drain can be categorized as:

1) Economic factors: Better opportunity as well as better pays.

In many of the cases, lack of employment and low salaries, tempt people to look for better salaries elsewhere.

2) Political factors:
Many times, Migration takes place in response to wars and Political and social turmoil. Thus, citizens lose confidence to their government and future prospects for better life. To illustrate, since the fall of Soviet Union in 1991 more than500, 000 Russian scientists and computer programmers are said to have left the country.
In the same way, under the rule of Saddam Hussein 4 million Iraqis are believed to have left the country

Brain drain can lead to many consequences. People usually go from developed to developing country .So this leaves the country further poor as they have to hire professionals from other country.

An opposite situation in which many trained and talented individuals seek entrance into a country is called brain gain.
Likewise, this may create a brain drain in the nations that the individuals are leaving, alluring more skilled professionals to the country than it actually lost. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as a brain transplant.

Possible remedies:

• Better pay and recognitions for home professionals instead of hiring expertises from abroad.

•Political stabilities and governance at national and international level.

•Offering individual the necessary educational qualifications in their home countries and expand better educational infrastructure.

Brain drain is now a global phenomenon .Almost all countries seem to lose its professionals to richer countries. It affects the poor countries that are losing their professionals and have to hire foreign professionals in their place. Richer countries may not be affected much as they can attract more skilled labors then they actually lost.

As per some political and human rights, it seem impossible to stop brain drain .Nevertheless, its affects can be made less severe.
